Jane Seymour: From Dr Quinn to Artist
by Jen Longshaw

Jane Seymour

Jane Seymour, best known for her television role of Dr Quinn Medicine Woman, began painting nearly a decade ago. A stressful personal crisis had caused her to turn to art as a healing process. Soon she was accomplishing sensitive and delicate watercolours and oils of flowers and children.

A love of art was nurtured from a young age in Hillingdon England in a household where making family gifts was encouraged. Visiting museums was also a favoured pastime and would later influence Seymour’s painting. Favourite artists included Matisse, Chagall and Raoul Duffy. John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer also inspire her work today.

Watercolour is perhaps the medium closest to Seymour’s heart. Once commissioning renowned Santa Barbara watercolourist Tom Mielko to paint a portrait of her children Seymour began working alongside him. She still paints with other artists either on her travels or else in her Malibu studio.

Gardening is another creative force that has proved a vital part of her artistic life inspiring her delicate floral paintings. Her beautiful garden at her Elizabethan manor St Catherine’s Court in Bath, England is a place of meditation and reflection helping to motivate her work.  A trip to Monet’s garden in Giverny, France in August 2001 inspired a sequence of paintings and later a series of art education films on the masters entitled “Journey to Impressionism” with husband/director James Keach.

Seymour’s love of children is reflected in her expressive portraits and her art work is often donated to charities helping children in need including Childhelp USA, Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation amongst others.

Recently Seymour has exhibited her work in galleries across the United States as well as accepting select private commissions. She has also created set designs for the Houston Ballet and a commission for the Fort Worth Dallas Ballet. Currently she is working on a series of linen designs, children’s fashions and art handbags.
